DeMar Is Pissed, Kawhi Doesn’t Hate It

I sleep like shit. When I sleep like shit, I check my phone. When I checked my phone this morning and saw Adrian Wojnarowski report that a deal was finalized to send DeMar DeRozan to the San Antonio Spurs for Kawhi Leonard I had to do a double take. Holy shit, what a trade. Talk about a Woj Bomb to wake you up in the morning.

I don’t think this man ever sleeps. I got to say though, I don’t hate this trade.

Kawhi to the Raptors shows that they are serious about winning a title now. The East is weak as hell and a move like this puts them in contention. DeRozan is a great player, but for some reason he can’t get his team to the next level. Kawhi is a Finals MVP, two time Defensive Player of the Year, and has finished in the top three of MVP voting twice. The Raptors take this deal any day of the week.

The Spurs get a player who hopefully won’t sit out. As a four time All Star, DeRozan brings leadership and winning (in the regular season) experience to a team that is looking to stay relevant in the extremely competitive Western Conference. DeRozan has got to be pissed though. He just finished getting his ass kicked by Lebron James and when he thinks he’s rid of him he gets shipped to the same conference. I don’t think DeRozan changes much about the Spurs but I do think Gregg Popovich will make DeRozan a better player.

DeRozan has three more years in his contract, so he will have time to improve in their system. Leonard on the other hand is more of a question mark to Toronto. He is on his last year and Toronto will probably try to ink him to a new deal. I could see him staying there just so he can have success in the playoffs, but I also wouldn’t be surprised if he left after this year.

This was a huge move for both teams. Frankly it’s been one fans have been waiting for for a long time. I love blockbuster trades. This trade is very interesting and I’m excited to see how it all pans out. Hopefully both players are healthy and it won’t be another Kyrie Irving and Isaiah Thomas trade.
